Wearing a Mouthguard

In the world of sports, injuries involving impact to the mouth and jaw are common.  This is why it’s essential for athletes, both professional and amateur, to protect this area of their bodies.

Wearing mouthguards will help protect the teeth and gums as well as give some support to the jaw.  No matter which sport you are involved in: football, basketball, soccer, hockey, softball, tennis, gymnastics, martial arts, cheerleading or any other such activity, wear a mouthguard.

Caring for your Mouthguard

You must properly take care of cleaning and storing your mouthguard to insure the proper fit and longevity.

Here is some advice for keeping your mouthguard at its best:

  • Always store in your mouthguard in its protective case
  • After use, gently clean it with a toothbrush and dishwashing soap
  • Never use hot water to clean it
  • Never leave it in a hot car or exposed to the sun as it will lose its shape and fit
  • Do not chew your mouthguard as you will damage it and lose its protective qualities
  • Replace it if you notice it has become loose, worn or no longer fits properly

Always bring your mouthguard when you come in for your cleaning visit so that we can evaluate its fit and clean it for you.
